Barewood

Barewood

As we headed south we called in on Carolyn and Joe Farraby, and there garden called Barewood. Carolyn is the sister of Kay Green, of Broomfield.
About 25km inland, this is hot, dry sheep country. The Farraby’s have created a bit of an oasis with their garden. The original section of the current home, called Cob Cottage, was built in the late 1800’s by a gentleman from Yorkshire, applying the name of his English homestead to that of his new residence.

Pronounced “Barwood”, Carolyn and Joe purchased the property with an addition to the original cottage, about 30 years ago and it has been developing ever since. A bit less formal that her sister’s garden, Carolyn’s passion for her plants is undeniable.

Their home in embraced by the garden, in a good way, with a large veranda that creates a room outside the house of summer living. Not formally trained in horticulture she apologizes, but her enthusiasm and undaunted energy are astounding.

Her travels have afforded her the opportunity to meet quite a few of the personalities that operate in this industry, and after a brief name drop session we all quickly realize that it is a small world horticulturaly speaking. We retired too the veranda for Joe’s locally famous strong coffee and a few slices of what can best be described as Christmas fruitcake, only edible and quite good!
