The Crossing

January 2nd, Bright sun, 70°

We queued for the Interislander ferry, which would take us from Wellington through the Cook Straight into Picton on the South Island. While waiting to drive on, we listened to some good old-fashioned USA bashing from the Campervan next to us. I don’t know that we gave them any reason to believe we were yanks, as it was early in the morning and we weren’t talking much yet.
Just interesting I thought that spontaneously these topics came up. World domination, the arrogance of power, Dubya’and his policies. But one point that came up in the group discussion brought me right back home. They were saying how the US government bows to the control of the gun and tobacco lobbies,
And lets the big business run free with their wishes, and it was Du Pont Company that was the example of a chemical giant running amok globally. Small world indeed.
Boarding the giant vessel, we found the only childfree environment on board, the lounge and took our comfy seats.

Despite fairly calm seas, wind and spray kept most inside and Lenny was patient with me as I used the opportunity to catch up with posts. As we entered the channel to picton, the mountains offered protection from the wind.

With the calm and bright blue sky the water and geography were awesome. Welcome to the south island.
