Wilson otari Bush

Jan 1st, Sunny 80° (Have you noticed a theme in the weather?)

Otari-Wilton Bush

What we back in the states would refer to as the “woods”, is called bush here. Pronounced booosh, it refers to an unspoilt tract, of which there is not much, natural or native mix of herbaceous and woody under story plants through to the canopy.
The rock garden was a highlight for me. Established primarily native plants, including many Hebes, were displayed in massive rockeries, woven together by small clever paths.

A canopy walk, stable and sure provided not only breathtaking views down the valley to the city, but down 50/60 feet, to the bush floor below, with minimal impact as well.

In 1860, Mr. Wilton had the foresight to purchase and protect this tract from logging threats primarily, and to this day is probably the best if not closest example of untouched bush accessible to the residents of Wellington. Again, the residents were there, in the gardens and the booosh. We took the city bus and were there very quickly and returned by way of our next stop in Wellington.
