Hamilton Botanic Gardens

Sat. 29th, Sunny, hot 80°

I'm posting this after i've already returned, I discovered it in my posted file, yet unposted.

After leaving Auckland and heading south for about 2 hours, we arrived in Hamilton. This provided a nice opportunity to stretch our legs and call in on the Hamilton Botanic Gardens.

Run by the park system of Hamilton, this is clearly one of the city’s largest green spaces, and being used as such. A series of theme gardens seems to be a large draw within the garden so off we went.

Hedges of Corokia 2-3 m tall define the entry and garden walls. Within each garden room is displayed a different theme. The themes include, the English Garden, the Chinese Scholars Garden, Japanese Contemplation Garden, an Italianate Villa, and an American Garden. The latter appears to be a Thomas Church/Isabel Green/Dan Kiley homogenization with bright yellow Adirondack chairs. Those wacky yanks.

Leaving the theme gardens additional areas include the sustainable garden (catch phrase here too), Kitchen garden, one of the largest I have ever seen in a public space and interestingly a turf evaluation area to let visitors actually see the difference in texture/ color and performance of readily accessible seed varieties.
A stroll around the large central pond wove us through collections of Camellias, Rhododendrons and an area displaying suitable landscape plants for New Zealand.
