Wellington Waterfront Park and Te Papa

Te Papa, Our Place and Skateboard Street Trees

Te Papa is the name of the Museum at the harbor in Wellington devoted to the culture and history of New Zealand. Free to all, we spent an hour absorbing what we could, of a vast assortment of interactive displays and exhibits.

Well worth the time and deserving of much more. Leaving the museum, we intended to head back to the hotel for some r & r, but were distracted by some municipal planting adjacent to the museum.

Oh boy. This is the most exciting thing in terms of public landscape I’ve seen here, and top three anywhere. What appears to be a manmade estuary or tidal wetland. That is an area that naturally upon a hide tide fills and saturates with water, yet drains upon low tide. However it seems that it also serves as a large percolation zone for runoff of the museum,

There is even a skateboard park in the middle of all of this complete with growing and succeeding trees in the ramp area.

it’s parking and much of the paved area in the harbor area. Laid out with a strong design element and planted with what appears to be all natives, it’s a very exciting place to see. Parts of this green space are at a higher elevation and could be best described as a gravel culture gardens are installed there, again utilizing native and employing confident design.

.

Sometimes the best discoveries are by accident.
